Today Ashton and I headed over to Rum Fire at the Sheraton Waikiki to celebrate Guncle Travis' birthday! Too bad we didn't get any pictures of the birthday boy with Ashton. The party was in a cabana so we had lots of shade and lawn furniture so that Ashton could sit and play with his toys while mommy had a nice glass of wine and chatted with old friends. Funny thing is, the last time I saw those few friends was last year at Travis' birthday.
Ashton was a doll as always. Everyone loves to play with him and he is such a good boy. He just chills.

The White House Greeting
Ashton received The White House Greeting.
"Welcome to the world! Your arrival is a cause for great celebration for your proud family. We wish you a long and happy life filled with changes to learn, ideas to explore, people to love, and dreams to fulfill."
I'm not 100% sure it is actually signed by the Obama's. It doesn't look to be. It's a nice addition to the baby book:-)

Ohana Music Together
Today Ashton and I went to try out Ohana Music Together. I really enjoyed myself and I am pretty sure Ashton did as well. I am pretty sure we'll sign up. The fee is $185 for 10 weeks. The class falls on Saturdays starting at 9:15 am.
We sang some songs, did a little dance, played with musical instruments and meet some other kids. Ashton was the youngest, but I spoke to another mother who started her little girl when she was 3 months old and have been going ever since (she is now 3 years old).

Ashton is 5 Months Old!
.....and I can't believe how fast these past 5 months have gone by! It makes me a little sad that my 8.5 pound baby boy is now 19 pounds!
Ashton can now:
Jump up and down in his jumparoo and loves it!
Grabs objects, rather it be my hair, toy hanging from his play mat or the strap to my camera.
Laugh out loud all the time
Tries to sit up and can tripod
Bath time has been interesting, Ashton sits up and almost falls face first into the water (whale tub design?)
Rolls from back to tummy
Still hates tummy time
His eyes Follow me around the room and he smiles at me when I walk in (especially when I pick him up from daycare).
That is all I can think of now, but I will be sure to post more often.
I love this boy to pieces and could not imagine a day without him in my life.

Wee Play
Ashton and I are looking for something to keep us entertained on the weekends since Adam is always working and I am looking to meet some other mom's that I can make friends with. There are several different places we are going to try out. Fortunately for us, there is no charge for the intro classes.
Yesterday we went to Wee Play over at Ward Center. It is a super nice facility, with mats everywhere, a studio for mom to workout in, a preschool and they offer open play for an hour a day in addition to the many classes suited for each age group.
I'm not sure that Ashton is old enough for this type of class yet (even though it is for his age group, I didn't feel like it was geared towards his age). Of course ,we were the only two there which defeats one of the purposes to join this type of activity. The class is a mix of music, playing with toys, singing and dancing, along with musical instruments.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed and don't think I will be paying the $150 for 3 months (weekends only).
Next weekend, we're going to check out Ohana Music.
P.S. Poor Ashton is sick again. He has had somewhat of a cold since we got back from Maryland almost two weeks ago. Poor baby:-(

Babywearing 101
As many of you probably know, I have an obsession with carriers. I have the ERGO Baby Carrier, Maya wrap, Moby wrap, Baby Hawk Mei Tai, Baby Bjorn and few other mother made wraps that I have purchased from local vendors.
Ashton is only happy facing outward and has been this way since he was born. Research suggests that some babies can be overstimulated while facing out, but not my boy; he falls asleep in this position. Some babies are fine facing outward and Ashton has proved on more than one occasion that if he's not facing out, then forget the wrap all together. We'll see once he is older, how he feels being carried on my back, but for now, I was desperate and needed other options.
I can get away using the Moby with Ashton facing outward, but getting that on is quite an ordeal if I want to do a quick run into the grocery store. He still seems a little to young (his leg spread is not wide enough) for the Ergo, Baby Hawk Mei Tai and other mother made carrier that I have. This leaves me with the Bjorn and Maya Wrap.
The Bjorn is ok. I only use it for quick trips to Target (Adam uses it more than I)and we make sure that we support his bum. There have been so many stories that using the Bjorn can cause hip problems for baby later in life. Today during Babywearing 101 at BabyaWearness taught by babywearing expert, Kristin Speltz, RN, and leader of E Ho'ohapai na Kamalei, O'ahu's babywearing group that this has not been proven. Kristin's only concern with the Bjorn were Ashton's "family jewel." The "family jewels" are not meant to support all of ones weight.
This leaves the Maya Wrap. My good friends purchased this for me when Ashton was born. I took it out of the package and attempted to learn how to use it with no success. I have heard that this wrap is especially great for babies, like Ashton, who prefer to face outward. Today, Kristin, taught me how to use it. I only had it on for about 15 minutes and it did take Ashton a few minutes to realize that he was ok. I wore him in the hip carrying position which was was more comfortable than it looks. Kristin showed me how to thread the fabric though the rings, how to position the sling, how to properly position Ashton in the fabric and finally taught me how to properly tighten the fabric. Notice that there is quite a bit of "properly" in there:-) I could get the sling on, I just could not properly position Ashton without fear he would fall if I let go of him.
Kristin also showed me many of the other wraps I had been eyeing such as the Pikkolo and the Beco. I liked the Pikkolo since it has the baby facing outward option. After trying that on and a few others, I realized that my back really will not allow me to carry him facing outward for much longer so there was no need to purchase a new carrier like the Pikkolo. For now, I am going to stick with the ones I have and use the Maya Wrap while I can, then move on to the Ergo and Baby Hawk.
Overall, I really enjoyed the instruction and the store. The ladies were wonderful to work with and I will be headed back there soon. Oh and they see/buy used cloth diapers. I dropped off the ones that no longer fit Ashton. We'll see if I can make some of my $ back.
I'll be sure to post a picture of Ashton and I using the Maya wrap soon.

Miracle of Life
Before you were conceived
I wanted you
Before you were born
I loved you
Before you were here an hour
I would die for you
This is the miracle of life.
